Food musings

Being a sindhi, food has been an intrinsic part of my existence. I have grown up eating the quintessential Sindhi delicacies namely, saayi bhaji chawal (spinach cooked with lentils), dal pakwan (lentils again eaten with crisp fried puris), sehal phulke (leftover phulkas from over night cooked in tomato, garlic and coriander gravy) prepared by my mother. I couldn't stop drooling over the above mentioned names even though my stomach is filled to the brim. Clearly I am a big fan of home cooked food. Having said that I have a special place in my heart for street food, delicacies dripping with cheese, laden with butter waiting to clog your arteries with their fulfilling ambrosial taste.

Partly due to the trouble my stomach had to undergo and escalated cholesterol levels after galloping those lakhnawi galouti and kakori kababs and endless kulhars of lassi topped with malai and dry fruits during my internship days. Having said that, I still venture into the streets for those inviting treats, searching for new and undiscovered places, exploring age old recipes and meeting people marinated with food traditions.

They do not look so tempting but believe me the taste is out of this world.

This has proved to be a somewhat daunting task as one can explore only so many culinary treats alone. I long for a gourmet companion with whom I can experience street and gourmet food alike. But alas! the journey has been lonely so far.
But I must concede, TV has had a big role to play to shape my tastes and my affinity towards myriad flavors. Shows such as Come dine with me, Eat Street, Food Safari, Chakh le India and the incredible Highway on my plate entertain and invite at the same time.
